German Verbs with the Dative: 30 Important Verben mit Dativ

Ich helfe meiner Mutter. Whom do I help? My mother, and in German she stands in the Dativ. With these verbs the person or thing the action is aimed at answers the question Wem? (to whom?), not Wen? (whom?). English does not mark this difference on nouns (you help your mother, you help him), so the Dativ is the part you have to remember verb by verb.

helfen + Dativ

Ichhelfemeiner Mutter.

Ich helfe meiner Mutter.I help my mother.

The main trap is gefallen: English says “I like the book” with you as the subject, German turns it around. The book is the subject and you stand in the Dativ.

gefallen + Dativ

Das Buchgefälltmir.

Das Buch gefällt mir.I like the book. The subject is the book.

These five verbs sound more bookish than the rest: entspringen, entsprechen and zustehen turn up more in writing and formal speech, while begegnen and widersprechen are normal in conversation too. At B1, recognising them is enough.

Seven verbs of forgiving, advising, ordering, allowing and forbidding put the person in the Dativ and the thing concerned in the Akkusativ: verbieten das Rauchen, vergeben einen Fehler. After raten, nahelegen and befehlen an Infinitivsatz with zu is more common than an Akkusativ.

Honestly about the formsMost of these forms follow no rule, so learn them one by one. The deck for this lesson keeps the Präteritum of every verb. Partizip II has no ge- for gratulieren (hat gratuliert), vertrauen, erlauben and verbs with the prefixes be-, ver-, ent-, miss-; zuhören puts ge- in the middle: hat zugehört. Vowel change in the Präsens: {de('er hilft, es gefällt, du rätst, er rät, er befiehlt, du widersprichst, er widerspricht, es entspricht, es fällt ein, er vergibt')}.

Almost all mistakes with these verbs are an Akkusativ where the Dativ belongs, or a flipped construction. Seven frequent cases.

Ich helfe dich. Ich helfe dir.Helfen takes the Dativ.

Ich gefalle das Buch. Das Buch gefällt mir.In gefallen the thing is the subject and you are in the Dativ.

Ich glaube dich nicht. Ich glaube dir nicht. You believe a person in the Dativ.

Ich antworte die Frage. Ich antworte auf die Frage.Answering a question: auf + Akkusativ.

Ich gratuliere dir für den Geburtstag. Ich gratuliere dir zum Geburtstag. You congratulate on something with zu + Dativ.

Er verbietet seinen Sohn das Rauchen. Er verbietet seinem Sohn das Rauchen. The person is Dativ, the ban is Akkusativ.

Ich habe ihm begegnet. Ich bin ihm begegnet.Begegnen forms the Perfekt with sein.

You now know thirty verbs that put the person in the Dativ, and their traps. Five checks:

The person after these verbs answers Wem?: mir, dir, ihm, ihr, uns, euch, ihnen.
gefallen, schmecken, passen, fehlen, gehören: the thing is the subject and you are in the Dativ.
Es tut mir leid, mir fällt ein, mir ist kalt: learn the impersonal expressions as phrases.
verbieten, erlauben, raten, verzeihen: the person gets the Dativ, the thing the Akkusativ, and Ich erlaube es dir.
Perfekt with sein for gelingen, einfallen, begegnen, entspringen.
