German Conjunctions: Konjunktionen und, aber, weil, dass, wenn

Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank. and Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. The meaning is the same, but the verb bin has moved: first it sits in second place, then at the very end. You do not move it, the conjunction does. The whole topic of Konjunktionen comes down to which place the conjunction leaves for the verb.

denn → verb in position 2

IchbleibezuHause,dennichbinkrank.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.I am staying home, because I am ill.

weil → verb at the end

IchbleibezuHause,weilichkrankbin.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.I am staying home, because I am ill.

Three groups of conjunctions

und · oder · aber · denn · sondernthe verb stays in position 2

weil · dass · wenn · ob · obwohl · währendthe verb moves to the end

entweder … oder · nicht nur … sondern auch · sowohl … als auch · weder … nochwork as a pair, the verb keeps its usual place in each part

Mia and Jonas decide whether to go to the cinema. Almost every conjunction of this lesson is in their talk. Listen and watch where the verb stands after each one.

Mia:

Gehen wir heute ins Kino, oder bleibst du zu Hause?

Are we going to the cinema today, or are you staying home?

Jonas:

Ich bin müde, aber ich komme gern mit.

I am tired, but I am happy to come along.

Mia:

Prima! Ich glaube, dass der Film heute um acht beginnt.

Great! I think the film starts at eight today.

Jonas:

Weißt du, ob wir noch Karten bekommen?

Do you know whether we can still get tickets?

Mia:

Ich schaue online nach, denn an der Kasse ist es immer voll.

I will check online, because the box office is always crowded.

Jonas:

Gut. Ich komme, obwohl ich morgen früh aufstehen muss.

Good. I will come, even though I have to get up early tomorrow.

Mia:

Weil du so müde bist, trinken wir vorher einen Kaffee.

Since you are so tired, we will have a coffee first.

Jonas:

Super. Wenn der Film gut ist, bleibe ich auch wach.

Super. If the film is good, I will stay awake too.

The five conjunctions und, oder, aber, denn, sondern join words or whole sentences. Between two sentences they do not touch the word order: the conjunction stands in “position zero”, and in each part the verb stays in second place, as in any ordinary sentence.

UNDandIch lerne Deutsch und mein Bruder lernt Englisch.I learn German and my brother learns English.

ODERorDu kannst hier warten oder du kommst mit.You can wait here or come with us.

ABERbutIch bin müde, aber ich lerne weiter.I am tired, but I keep learning.

DENNbecause, forIch bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.I am staying home, because I am ill.

SONDERNbut rather (after a negation)Ich fahre nicht mit dem Bus, sondern ich gehe zu Fuß.I am not taking the bus, I am walking.

Watch the verb: it is in position 2 in both parts

Ichbinmüde,aberichlerneweiter.

Ich bin müde, aber ich lerne weiter.I am tired, but I keep learning.

aber or sondernaber means “but”: what was said stays true and a contrast follows. sondern means “but rather”: it corrects a negation, so it comes after nicht or kein. Compare: Ich bin müde, aber ich lerne weiter. and Das ist nicht Tee, sondern Kaffee.

The commaBefore aber, denn and sondern the comma is always there. Before und and oder between two full sentences it is optional.

The mnemonic ADUSOThe first letters of the five conjunctions spell ADUSO: Aber, Denn, Und, Sondern, Oder. Spot one of them and the verb stays in second place.

These six conjunctions open a subordinate clause (Nebensatz): it is set off by a comma, and the conjugated verb goes to the very end. The conjunction seems to “take” the verb and send it to the end.

WEILbecauseIch bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.I am staying home because I am ill.

DASSthatIch weiß, dass er heute kommt.I know that he is coming today.

WENNif; wheneverIch lerne Deutsch, wenn ich Zeit habe.I learn German when I have time.

OBwhether, ifIch weiß nicht, ob er heute kommt.I do not know whether he is coming today.

OBWOHLalthoughIch gehe spazieren, obwohl es regnet.I am going for a walk although it is raining.

WÄHRENDwhileIch höre Musik, während ich lerne.I listen to music while I study.

Watch the verb: after weil it is at the very end

IchlerneDeutsch,weilichZeithabe.

Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich Zeit habe.I learn German because I have time.

dass or dasdass with two s is the conjunction “that”: Ich glaube, dass er kommt. das with one s is an article or a pointing word: das Buch, Das ist gut. Quick test: if you can replace it with dieses or welches, it is das; otherwise it is dass, and the verb of its clause goes to the end.

ob and wennob turns a question without a question word into a subordinate clause: Kommt er? → Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt. wenn means “if” and “whenever” for repeated or future things. For a single event in the past you need als, which is a separate topic. English uses “if” for both: if you can say “whether”, use ob.

denn or weilBoth mean “because”. denn keeps the verb in second place and cannot start a sentence. weil sends the verb to the end and can open a sentence: Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause. In speech weil is far more common, denn sounds more written.

English “that”English often drops “that”: I think he is ill. German has two correct options: Ich glaube, dass er krank ist. (dass, verb at the end) or Ich glaube, er ist krank. (no dass, normal order). Never mix them.

In a subordinate clause the conjugated verb is always last. It shows most clearly in three cases where there are several verbs or verb parts.

1. The separable prefix: in a main clause it goes to the end

Ichstehefrühauf.

Ich stehe früh auf.I get up early.

But in a subordinate clause it rejoins the verb

Ichbinmüde,weilichfrühaufstehe.

Ich bin müde, weil ich früh aufstehe.I am tired because I get up early.

2. The modal verb comes last, the infinitive before it

IchlerneDeutsch,weilichinDeutschlandlebenmöchte.

Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland leben möchte.I am learning German because I want to live in Germany.

3. Perfekt: haben or sein at the very end

Ichbinmüde,weilichlangegearbeitethabe.

Ich bin müde, weil ich lange gearbeitet habe.I am tired because I worked for a long time.

One rule for every caseThe conjugated part is the very last word of the clause. If there are two verbs, the infinitive or participle comes before it, not after.

A subordinate clause can come before the main clause. It then fills the whole first position and second place belongs to the verb of the main clause. So the verb, not the subject, comes right after the comma.

weil

Weil ich krank bin,bleibeichzuHause.

Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.Since I am ill, I am staying home.

wenn

Wenn ich Zeit habe,lerneichDeutsch.

Wenn ich Zeit habe, lerne ich Deutsch. When I have time, I learn German.

obwohl

Obwohl es regnet,geheichspazieren.

Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich spazieren.Although it is raining, I am going for a walk.

Two verbs side by sideThe check is simple: two verbs should meet at the comma, bin, bleibe. If ich stands after the comma and the verb comes later, the sentence is wrong: Weil ich krank bin, ich bleibe zu Hause.

Choose the correct sentence.

How do you say in German: “I am staying home because I have a headache.”?

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich habe Kopfschmerzen.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil habe ich Kopfschmerzen.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich Kopfschmerzen habe.

Two-part conjunctions work like brackets: the first part opens, the second closes. They join things of the same kind, word with word or sentence with sentence, and they do not send the verb to the end: after entweder the verb follows at once, and oder, like und and aber, takes no position.

ENTWEDER … ODEReither … orEntweder fahren wir mit dem Bus, oder wir gehen zu Fuß.Either we take the bus or we walk.

NICHT NUR … SONDERN AUCHnot only … but alsoIch lerne nicht nur Deutsch, sondern auch Englisch.I learn not only German but also English.

SOWOHL … ALS AUCHboth … andIch spreche sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.I speak both German and English.

WEDER … NOCHneither … norIch trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.I drink neither coffee nor tea.

The verb is in position 2 in both parts, entweder stands before it

EntwederfahrenwirmitdemBus,oderwirgehenzuFuß.

Entweder fahren wir mit dem Bus, oder wir gehen zu Fuß.Either we take the bus or we walk.

weder … noch already contains the negationDo not add nicht or kein: Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee. Wrong: Ich trinke nicht weder Kaffee noch Tee.

Words:

Most mistakes with conjunctions come down to the verb ending up in the wrong place. Seven frequent cases.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich bin krank. Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin. After weil the verb goes to the end.

Ich weiß, dass er kommt heute. Ich weiß, dass er heute kommt. After dass also to the end.

Ich bin müde, aber ich nach Hause gehe. Ich bin müde, aber ich gehe nach Hause. After aber the order is normal, the verb is in position 2.

Weil ich müde bin, ich gehe schlafen. Weil ich müde bin, gehe ich schlafen.Subordinate clause first: the verb comes right after the comma.

Ich bleibe zu Hause weil ich krank bin. Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich krank bin.A comma always stands before a subordinate clause.

Ich glaube, das er kommt. Ich glaube, dass er kommt. The conjunction is spelled dass, with two s.

Ich trinke nicht weder Kaffee noch Tee. Ich trinke weder Kaffee noch Tee.Weder … noch is already a negation, no nicht needed.

It is easier to learn conjunctions in ready phrases: the word order then comes by itself. Pick two or three and use them today.

OBnot sure whetherIch weiß nicht, ob das stimmt.I do not know whether that is true.

DASSgiving an opinionIch glaube, dass das eine gute Idee ist.I think that is a good idea.

WENNasking for a callWenn du Zeit hast, ruf mich an.If you have time, call me.

OBWOHLa concessionIch komme, obwohl ich keine Lust habe.I will come although I do not feel like it.

WEILexplaining a choiceIch nehme den Bus, weil das schneller geht.I take the bus because it is faster.

ENTWEDER … ODERan either-or choiceEntweder jetzt oder nie.Either now or never.

Colloquial weilIn everyday speech you will hear Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich bin krank. The verb is in second place here. This is a colloquial variant: it is useful to understand it, but in writing, in exams and in tests only the verb at the end is correct.

You can now join sentences and you know exactly where to put the verb. Five checks:

und, oder, aber, denn, sondern (ADUSO): the verb stays in position 2.
weil, dass, wenn, ob, obwohl, während: a comma and the verb at the end.
Subordinate clause first: the main verb right after the comma, Weil ich krank bin, bleibe ich zu Hause.
Two-part conjunctions join like with like; weder … noch without nicht.
dass with two s is the conjunction, das with one s is the article.
